A Yogi's Thesaurus

To help aid new and beginner yogis with yoga terminology I have created a yogi’s thesaurus

Yogi: A person who practices yoga.

Pranayama: Breathing techniques to balance and bring energy and to stabilizes moods. Long term, this practice can help with things like anxiety, stress, depression, insomnia, improved focus and self-awareness.

Asana: Asana is a body posture, which was originally a sitting pose for meditation (seat of comfort), but is now used for yoga and modern yoga as exercise.

Vinyasa Flow: Means to move with consciousness; A flowing and dynamic sequence of poses which involve synchronizing breath with a continuous flow of postures. A moving meditation!

Hatha: Hatha means willful or forceful. Hatha yoga refers to a set of physical exercises (known as asanas). These are designed to align your muscles and bones. Hatha is also translated as ha meaning Sun and tha meaning Moon.

Ashtanga: This is a rigorous style of yoga that follows a specific sequence of postures that is similar to vinyasa yoga; each style links every movement to a breath. The difference between vinyasa and ashtanga is that ashtanga always performs the exact same poses in the same order.

Lunar Flow: This moon salutation is a series of poses performed in a particular sequence to create a cooling and calming flow of movement.

Chakra: The word Chakra from Sanskrit translates to wheel or disk but references a spiritual energy center within the human body, keeping the body sturdy, stabilized and supported when everything is functioning properly.

Yin Yoga: A slow paced style of yoga incorporating principles of traditional Chinese medicine, with asanas that are held for a longer period of time, bringing many internal benefits.
